Thanks to map user Paul O’Callaghan for sending on this photo of the Cow & Calf Rock located in Upper Glenasmole in the Dublin Mountains. This large granite boulder is about 2 metres in height with a hollow underneath and with a small rock (the calf) at it’s foot. It lies within the Wicklow Mountains National Park and is marked on both older and new versions of our Dublin Mountains map.
The Cow & Calf Rock would be a landmark for local hill farmers and also used for taking shelter if caught out in a shower nearby. It should be added that there other groups of rocks that may have the same name towards Castlekelly but the balance of evidence points to this one.
