I was involved in running mountain navigation courses and the like back in the 1980s. It’s where I honed navigation and route finding skills picked up previously in the course of exploring many Irish hill ranges. They say if you want to learn more of a subject, then teach it. It’s also where I came to appreciate what would make for better maps of the Irish hills. Night navigation was often part of these training courses, not for any perverse reason but simply to have more reliable conditions of limited visibility when navigation is more challenging. Misty conditions at night were even better 😊
