The last hillwalking photo from Charles Thompson is a panorama taken from Stony Top or Cleevaun East looking east towards Lough Dan & Cloghoge Mountain. Note the almost complete absence of forestry plantation. There are large pale patches on Cloghoge, some of which are rock but I think the bigger patches are where the heather has been managed for grouse. When I started hillwalking in Wicklow in the 1970s/80s there were a lot more grouse about, not unusual at all for one to fly up in front of you.
