Achill Greenway Update
The Great Western Greenway is a popular recreational cycling route that runs from Westport to Achill Sound, more or less along the line of the Great Western Railway that closed in 1934. The greenway route from Newport to Mulranny is shown in detail on our Wild Nephin 1:25,000 scale map whilst the Mulranny to Achill Sound greenway is shown on our Achill, Corraun & Clare Island 1:25,000 map.
The old railway terminated at Achill Sound and was until recently the western end of the greenway. But a new section linking Achill Sound to Cashel has been finished and opened and the eventual plan is I believe to continue to Keel and it’s fine beach.
The map extract here shows the new section of route to best of my knowledge and if you own a copy of our Achill map, no harm to sketch it in. It’ll appear in our annual update of digital maps on Hiiker early in 2024 and eventually in print form, as & when a second edition is required.
