Description

The Western Way is the most popular long distance walking route in the West of Ireland. It commences in Oughterard on the shores of Lough Corrib in Co.Galway, traverses Connemara and Mayo to finish on the Mayo/ Sligo border near Bunnyconnellan, a distance of 235 kilometres. This guidebook deals with the southern and most popular part of the walk from Oughterard to Westport in Co.Mayo. This part of the route is 101 kilometres (63 miles) in length and ascends some 1800 metres.

This guidebook, first published in 2016 and now in second edition of 2021 provides all you need to walk The Western Way. The maps & text are arranged to suit those walking from Oughterard to Westport. The definitive map guide comprises of a detailed 32 page booklet with full colour 1/40000 scale strip maps packaged in plastic wallet. There are 12 map sections plus an additional map for the Killary ‘Famine Road’ walk. Information on local and natural history, routefinding and services.

Sept 2024: Please note that the Western Way is currently closed at Lackavrea Forest due to a dangerous footbridge. It is recommended that you start or finish the Western Way at Maam Cross on the N59 road and use a bus to travel to/ from Oughterard and/or Galway.
