Donegal Fieldwork

Returning from a few days fieldwork in Donegal, where I checked some areas of map detail for features. The difference between any map and a better map is always fieldwork and you can never do enough fieldwork. But there are practicalities to consider and for areas at distance like Donegal is from us, I concentrate on places where I have queries and/or areas that get regular use.

The photos here are typical of various features found during fieldwork, which are surveyed and added to the draft map detail which is compiled from aerial photos. Clockwise from top left are a) a wee tigín in Ardnamona Woods b) a newly constructed path in woods beside Gartan Loch c) a 19th century lime kiln near Dunlewey and d) an important footbridge that I wasn’t aware of in upper Glenveagh.
