Croghan
Croghan is a prominent pointy hill, just inland from Arklow in Co.Wicklow. Named from the Irish ‘Cruachán’ – the little stack or reek. That’s what it’d be called locally anyway, officially I guess it’d be Croghankinsella or Croghan Kinshelagh, commemorating the Kinsella clans that controlled much of the coast of South Wicklow and Wexford in the past. The summit is crowned by an outcrop of resistant schist and is known as the Pinnacle.
Croghan can be approached from various sides, the most straightforward is via the forest road network of Raheenleagh Wind Farm to the east. More romantically, you could approach from the north east from Ballinagore and the valley of the Gold Mines River. Or from the west via the complex of forest tracks north of Wicklow Gap, the lesser known one.
The whole area is well mapped on our Wicklow South 1:25,000 sheet. If you’re tired of the same routes in the main Wicklow hills, set off some day and explore the likes of Avoca & Croghan.
